About Forum Melbourne
Opened in 1929 as the State Theatre, the Forum was designed by the American picture-palace architect John Eberson with local firm Bohringer, Taylor & Johnson. It is an “atmospheric” theatre: the interior imitates an Italian garden at dusk, with Greco-Roman statues and a deep blue ceiling studded with lights like stars. The Moorish exterior with its minarets and clock tower is one of the most recognisable corners of the city. It became the Forum in the early 1960s, was split into two cinemas, later used for church services, and has run as a live music and events venue since the 1990s. In 2027 it hosts Hayley Williams, Angus & Julia Stone, Holly Humberstone, Clutch, Isaiah Rashad and Tash Sultana.
Getting to Forum Melbourne
The Forum is at 154 Flinders Street, on the Russell Street corner, so it is one of the easiest venues in Melbourne to reach. Flinders Street station is about five minutes’ walk west. Trams along Flinders Street and Swanston Street stop close by, and the venue is inside the Free Tram Zone. Parliament station on the City Loop is also within walking distance up the Russell Street hill. Parking is in paid CBD car parks only; there is no point driving. After a show, Flinders Street station is the obvious way home, with trains on every metropolitan line.
Before your Forum Melbourne concert
Depending on the show, the main floor is standing or partly seated, with tiered seating behind. Look up when you walk in; the ceiling is the attraction before the band starts. Flinders Lane and Degraves Street, a few minutes away, are full of bars and small restaurants. The building is old, so queues spill onto Flinders Street at peak entry; arrive with your ticket ready on your phone.
