What to know about Margaret Court Arena

Built as Show Court One when the tennis centre opened in 1988, it was renamed after Margaret Court in 2003. A redevelopment completed in 2015 gave it a retractable roof and lifted capacity to about 7,500, which made it useful all year round. That size is its point: it suits acts that have outgrown theatres but would look thin in Rod Laver Arena, and many shows use a reduced layout. During the Australian Open it is the second show court, and its roof means night tennis carries on in rain. The 2027 list shows the range: The Fray, KALEO and Dayseeker in February, Tove Lo and Ronan Keating in March, Delta Goodrem in April, UB40 in May.

Margaret Court Arena: getting there and back

Margaret Court Arena stands between Rod Laver Arena and the Yarra, so the directions are the same as for its big neighbour. Walk from Flinders Street station through Birrarung Marr and over the William Barak Bridge (about 15 minutes), or from Richmond station along Olympic Boulevard (around 10 minutes). Tram route 70 stops on Batman Avenue at the edge of the precinct. On nights when both arenas and the MCG are busy, the Richmond platforms get crowded after 10.30pm; walking back to Flinders Street often turns out quicker than queuing.

Before your Margaret Court Arena concert

Most sightlines are close, so lower-bowl side seats usually beat the rear of the floor. For a standing show, the floor fills from the front quickly once doors open. There are bars and food outlets across Melbourne Park, but the closest independent options are on Swan Street in Richmond. If you are coming from a summer show at Rod Laver Arena on the same night, allow for both crowds leaving together. Accessible seating is limited in a room this size, so request it at booking.
